Female Bonding at Whistler's Dave Murray Camp

Three weeks ago I went to Whistler (home to next year's Winter Olympics) for an all ladies ski week with 2 friends. I now fully comprehend why men have their corresponding all male golf (or ski) vacations. It was perhaps the most fun “all female” ski vacation I have taken, because all the stars were aligned properly for the 3 of us to have fun, and to bond.

I am no stranger to all ladies vacations, I have done countless of them, from those embarked with one friend to those with many, but none ever turned out to be so much fun. I will attribute the fun quotient to a combination of:

1) The company - individuals of like mind and temperament!

2) The skiing – miraculous that after a season of virtually no snow, we had 6" dumped on us on the first night of our arrival; also subjecting oneself to the Dave Murray Ski Camp (an adventure in and of itself); and skiing with speed demons and getting private lessons are always recipe for joviality!

3) The food - we alternated between making "gourmet" instant noodles at home (with Aoki mushrooms, Napa cabbage and eggs) and sumptuous fine dining at Rimrock Cafe and Araxi; interlaced with delectable meals at Sachi Sushi (fish so fresh that they melt in your mouth, sumptuous udon soap with tempura bits), Sushi Village (heavenly sweet potato tempura), indescribable chocolate chips waffles and the incomparable Dusty's juicy burgers!

It began with a gracious invitation by a very good friend E (now lives in HK) who has a beautiful home in Whistler, to join her and her good friend C from Singapore. Being happily unemployed it took me a nano second to accept the invitation. We then spent 3 days at the Dave Murray Ski Camp (formerly a racing camp and now a all-around ski camp – read a fellow camper’s hilarious rendition on how to survive this ordeal. From the camp director: “I think the ultimate compliment to our program is that a long time camper and full season returnee has put together his own website narrating his take on the Dave Murray Camps. It is very well written and is “based” on “his” facts, so keep an open mind and bring a sense of humor. Watch out for all the “hidden” surprises and see if you can find them: www.fcentre.plus.com/murraycamp/

I have 3 take-away from my THIRD Dave Murray Camp:

1) I showed up on the first day with a pair of rented Fischer World Cup GS skis, upon which I suffered immeasurably as an intermediate skier! Try picturing giving someone a Lamborghini to drive when one does not drive!!

2) I won for the second time out of three the dubious honor of “Most Improved” skier out of the entire camp of the week!! This meant that I was the worst person on Day 1 and I barely made it alive by the end of Day 3. For that I won a pair of goggle!
3) Our incomparable instructor who made us laugh non-stopped! I think he was destined to be in Hollywood and may still be his calling!!

I highly recommend that you spend your next vacation at Whistler and take the 3 day Dave Murray Ski Cam (available only Mondays to Wednesdays of every week during ski season).
